- After letting the tattoo rest for a few hours take the bandage off and wash that fresh as hell new tattoo to get it all cleaned up.
- Use a gentle antibacterial soap and wash your hands thoroughly, like Dial or Soft Soap.
- Gently wash your tattoo with your clean fingertips using only soap and water building up a small lather
- Rinse off your tattoo with cold to warm water. Do not use hot water.
- Make sure it doesn’t feel slimy anymore!
- Let your tattoo dry off
- Air dry or pat dry with a paper towel
- Do not use a washcloth or bath towel
- Apply Aquaphor
- Rub ointment between fingers to make it easier to apply to your sensitive new tattoo
- Gently rub ointment onto your tattoo and only your tattoo
- Using your fingertips gently massage the ointment around the skin to cover any fresh tattoo work
- You want to make your tattoo look sweaty, not goopy. To much ointment is bad!
- Tip: avoid moisturizing too far off the tattoo to avoid pimples and ingrown hairs!
- Wash and moisturize your tattoo 3 or 4 times a day until healed
- Typically a tattoo heals in 2-3 weeks
- Once the tattoo begins flake and peel you can switch to a non scented lotion in place of Aquaphor
- Drink a lot of water. It makes your skin happy and healthy. Not to mention your body needs water to heal the damaged skin resulting from being tattooed.
- Keep out of direct sunlight while healing but absolutely do not apply sunscreen to the tattoo until it is full healed
- Do not submerge your tattoo until fully healed. No baths, hot tubs, tubing or swimming at all.
- Showering is an absolutely necessary and important step to help with healing and does not fall under taking a bath
- Do not apply makeup, sunscreen or scented lotion on top of a healing tattoo and never shave over it until it is fully healed
- Avoid shoes/clothing that will rub or pull on your tattoo. Sometimes loose fitting clothing will rub more than something more snug. Avoid fuzzy and felty fabrics while the tattoo is healing. It acts like a gross, germ infected, Velcro picking and scratching at the sensitive healing skin.
